What is a Critical Incident?

Critical Incidents are traumatic events that cause powerful emotional reactions in people who are exposed to those events. Examples include:

  1. Line of duty deaths

  2. Suicide of a colleague

  3. Serious work related injury

  4. Multi-casualty/disaster/terrorism incidents

  5. Significant events involving children

  6. Events with excessive media interest

  7. Events that are prolonged and end with a negative outcome

  8. Events in which the victim is known to the personnel

  9. Events with a high degree of threat to personnel

  10. Any significantly powerful, overwhelming distressing event

First responders are ALWAYS on the front lines facing highly stressful and risky calls.

The pace of their work can often leave first responders without enough time to recover between traumatic incidents.

What is Critical Incident Stress Management?

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is a system of crisis intervention that helps to address the psychological damage associated with experiencing a critical incident.

The program is peer driven and the people conducting the interventions may come from all walks of life, but most are first responders (Police, Fire, EMS, Dispatch) or work in a mental health related field.

CISM is designed to help people deal with their trauma one incident at a time. Click the link below to learn more about our mission and examples of interventions used by our CISM team.
